Re: Hiccups While Feeding: Cause And Solution:
1) the most important thing to know that babies/infants do hiccup and may hiccup a lot during or after feeding and is Perfectly normal for them to hiccup intermittently however it should not be continuous through out the day! 2)the only thing u need to take care of is to Burp the baby after each feed preferrably.Burping is that u hold the baby in ur hand rest him on ur shoulder and pat the back of the baby mildly for a while after each feed that will remove the air swallowed. 3)Babies hiccup most frequently till age of 4-6months though may do even with bottle feeding or breast feeding the main reason is they swallow more air while feeding and their tummy are really small and they get distended easily(tummy) that then pushes on the diaphragm(that is muscular partition between chest and tummy) that causes diaphragm spasm and hiccup occur due to nerve irritation. 4)if baby hiccup during breast feed best is to A) keep on Feeding . this hiccup is only mental / psychological irration to mother else no Physical harm to baby and do not cause any problem in swallowing and Neither would the feeding liquid go to lungs(as is thought by mothers) .B) change the position of baby a bit like lift the head of baby keeping arm under baby head. C) give him luke warm water sips from feeder one or two. D) if too much trouble some for u burp the baby and start feeding again.. E) as told above best is to keep on feeding as else as soon you will move him away from the nipple baby will be agitated. 5) if you get hiccups during breast feeding kindly donot stop the feed, there is no point in agitating the baby.Best is u keep a glass of water with u and sip it .Else u may stop for a while IF u think baby wont be agitated.. as they are mostly!
