What is thyroid ?
Thyroid is a small endocrine gland present in front of neck,
endocrine means it secrets hormones in blood stream, and these hormones
regulate many functions in body. Thyroid function is regulated by other
hormones secrets by glands present in brain; thyroid gland regulates general
metabolism, temperature, calcium and phosphorous concentration and metabolism etc.
thyroid dysfunction can occur due to over or under secretion of its hormones. Iodine
plays a major role in thyroid disorders because iodine is a mineral which is
constituent of its hormones; thyroid disorders are commonly seen in people
living in areas of low iodine availability like hilly and mountainous areas, (iodine
is found naturally in sea food, milk and nuts). But iodine deficiency is not the
only cause of its dysfunction there are many other causes. Symptom of
hyperthyroidism are increased sensitivity to heat, diarrhoea, skin disorders ,
menstrual irregularities in females, bulging eyes, weight loss. In
hypothyroidism opposite picture is present like weight gain, increased sensitivity
to cold, constipation etc.
