syphilis can be transmitted from infected person is sexual mainly via vaginal, oral or anal sex also if contact with the ulceration or leison occurs. Kissing syphilis patient with mouth ulcers (of disease) may also transmit it. As such public day to day communication does not transmit it.
to confirm syphilis in exposed asymptomatic person
a simple blood sample is taken to diagnose for syphilis , the tests done are:
Venereal disease research laboratory VDRL
Rapid plasma reagin RPR
Fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test; FTA-ABS
Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay TPPA
Microhemagglutination assay; MHA-TP(not much done now)
Darkfield microscopy(if there is a patient with skin ulceration then scrapings are taken from the leison and seen under microscope)
mostly tests are of two types either direct visualization of bacteria under microscope is done or antibody titre(level)against bacteria of syphilis is seen in blood of the person suspecetd to be diseased also antibodies against bacteria may be introduced in the blood and it is noticed whether there is antigen(particle) of bacteria to clump(combine ) with it. |
