Hernia is the abnormal protrusion of a viscous or part of a viscous along with its coverings.
In simple words: hernia is the dis-ease which is caused by the hanging out of an organ or part of some organ (like intestine) enclosed in a covering (making sac like structure). Its sometimes asymptomatic just having a swelling which is painless and have only the cosmatic effect. But sometimes pain and discomfort can occur in the hernia. This is mainly due to loss of blood supply or obstruction. It is a surgical emergency and needs to be operated immediately.
The symptoms are: fever, vomiting, intense pain, prominence in the swelling, reddness of the swelling, rapid pulse rate or severe discomfort.
To prevent these un-desireable situations, early diagnosis and treatment is mandatory. The treatment involves: Conservative(using hernis belts, cups, etc) or surgical.
The surgery is done mostly under spinal anesthesia and its a very simple operation. If u see the operation list of a surgical department (of any hospital) the 30% are hernia operations.
Yes, hernia can occur in females also, incisional and femoral hernia (types of hernia ) are more common in females.
Pregnancy, smoking, constipation, chronic cough, stress, Abdominal surgery are the pre-disposing factors.
