Electricity produced in Pakistan is from three main sources i.e. Hydal, Thermal (Gas/Steam/Furnace Oil) and Nuclear. There are four major power producers in country which include Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Below is the break-up of the installed capacity of each of these power producers (as of June-2008).

Hydal Electricity generated by WAPDA varies between two extremities i.e. between minimum of 2414 MW and maximum of 6761 MW depending upon the river flow through the whole year.

Total Power Generation Capacity of Pakistan (including all sources) is 19855 MW and the electricity demand (as of today 20-04-2010) is 14500 MW and PEPCO is merely generating 10000 MW.

So it is obvious that these 15-20 hrs power shutdowns in most parts of the country are not because of the lack of generation capacity but only because of the incompetent and bad governance. Situation could have been better if some one cared enough......

hmari kitni hi factories power failure se band ho rhi hain, nateejatan berozgari barh rhi hai, pani saaf karnay k plants bhi band ho rhay hain, sirf bijli na honay se sab maslay multiply ho rhay hain.

PEPCO ka kehna hai k ussay pakistan government ki taraf se kae arab rupay ki payment nhi ki gai jis se woh majboor hai.... agar PEPCO ki baat ko darust tasleem kia jaey tau Pakistan Government se yeh sawal hai k jab Musharraf daur ma Electric companies ko privatize ki gaya tau pakistani awam ki taraf se direct billing pakistan goverment ko ho rahi thi.... tau goverment nay woh billing Electric Companies ko q nahi ki?? woh pakistanion k khoon paseenay ki mehnat se ada kiay huway bill kahan ghaib ho gaey?
