Drugs Affecting Fertility Of A Man

The power of the fertility is desired one that an individual want to have in order to spread his generation. However, unfortunately not all of the people do have this ability. There are so many reasons behind the screen. Even those who have full power of regeneration would not be able to make their offspring. Some times, it takes years in the presence of full functioning reproductive systems of a couple to have a baby. This article is made to address the possible cause of infertility or decreased fertility in the presence of normal reproductive capability. This is for giving the details over the impacts of drugs and medications on fertility power.

One could be astonished to see that beside some medications that are being given in order to treat certain illness, there are many substances that are used on daily basis and are found major culprit in this problem of infertility. We are classifying the drugs, medications and other substances according to their properties that are responsible in this context.

Classification Of Drugs Affecting Fertility Of A Man

  1. Recreational Drugs
  2. Addictive Drugs
  3. Steroids
  4. Drugs To Treat Diseases
  5. Natural Substances
  6. Others

Recreational Drugs: Impact of Recreational Drugs on Fertility

Recreational Drugs are those, which modifies life style. There are four most common drugs in this category:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Marijuana
  3. Heroin
  4. Cocaine

Alcohol: Impact of Alcohol on Fertility

This is most common and widely used recreational drug worldwide.  It is legally sold out and used to drink in the western culture. However, even in the Islamic countries Alcoholism is not uncommon. In our country as well, people use to take Alcohol despite the legal and religious restrictions. As far as Indo-Pak Subcontinent is concerned, there are two major varieties of Alcohol, which is manufactured and dispensed. The first one is Methanol and the second one is Ethanol. There are certain other varieties of Alcohol beside this above classification but the discussion about them is beyond the scope of this article. Methanol is a cheap one and therefore; those who are not rich use to take and drink and hence develops many problems about them they are not aware. The most important hazard of methanol is Blindness and a person keeps on going into darkness without knowing that he is going into this jeopardy on his own will.

The second type is Ethanol which although doesn't cause blindness but the person use to take it would not be saved from the other hazards of ethanol. Alcoholism causes liver failure and Cirrhosis, which is the most common cause of liver disease worldwide.

Heavy consumption of alcohol would not only impacts on the fertility power in men but also impacts badly on a woman. A man would suffer from low sperm count, defective morphology and poor progression. It means that all the properties of sperms are affected badly due to this habit. A woman would develop the impacts on her menstrual cycle, ovulation and leutal phase.

Another problem with alcoholism is that it would create the poor absorption capability of certain mineral and vitamins from intestine and also creates the loss of minerals from the body through high desire of passing urine. Alcoholism also develops hormonal imbalances in both men and woman. Those who are moderate drinkers also develops defects, like  a man does have defective morphology of sperms and some of his sperm producing cells in testes are destroyed. On the other hand, those women who use to take alcohol in moderate amount do have hormonal disturbances leading to the irregular menstrual cycle.

Marijuana: Impact Of Marijuana On Fertility

The most common class of Marijuana includes Cannabis Indica (Bhang). It contains an ingredient called as Tetra-hydro Cannabinol (THC), which produces serious impacts over the fertility power of both men and women and on the performance of sperms. In men, it is found that the sperm quantity, the volume of seminal fluid is decreased considerably due to the use of Marijuana and it also impacts on sperm's motility as will. Due to the use of marijuana, the sperms become sluggish and their fast moving pace which is mandatory to penetrate the egg for fertilization would be lost. THC is also secreted in the vaginal fluid in those women who use to take Marijuana like men. The sperms during intercourse when come in contact with this THC present in the vaginal secretions of a woman would develop the problems mentioned above and a couple then would not be able to enjoy the presence of their offspring even with the normal functional reproductive system.

Cocaine, Heroin And Other Drugs: Impacts On Fertility

Drugs like cocaine, heroin etc that are used in addiction create adverse impacts on the sexual and fertility power of both man and a woman. The long-term use of these drugs produces decreased sexual desire, abnormal sperm morphology and oligo-zoospermia in men, where as in woman it would create menstrual irregularities along with ovarian problems of functioning

Addictive Drugs – Tobacco Chewing Smoking – Gutkka Manpoori And Caffeine etc

Tobacco Smoking And Chewing – Impact Of Tobacco On Fertility

Tobacco is one of the most common addictive substances worldwide and the addiction is more common in men as compared to woman. Tobacco contains substance nicotine that performs various actions on the body. There are many hazards of both tobacco smoking and chewing. Among its hazards, tobacco produces bad impacts on the population of sperms. Majority of the people develops less amount of perfect sperms in their semen. Hence, tobacco is a known culprit of producing oligo-zoospermia or less sperm count in man. In woman, those who use to smoke even during their pregnancy would develop chromosomal abnormalities in their babies, stillbirth, abortions and miscarriages. Hence tobacco decreases testosterone level, disturb sperm quantity and quality and also affects egg binding capacity of sperms with the ovum.

Gutkka and Manpoori although banned in Pakistan, but still illegal sell is present over the counter. There are a lot of hazards of these substances even more than tobacco. Again, it produces bad impacts on sperms population and causes infertility in men.

Caffeine In Coffee - Impact of Caffeine on Fertility

There are various hazards of taking caffeine. It disturbs the absorption of various minerals like iron, zinc, magnesium calcium etc in the body. It crosses placenta and brings miscarriage. It produces the problems of adrenal glands and kidneys. These changes in the body may results in fertility problems. The use of cola drinks and chocolate are also suspected for fertility problem generation.

Steroids – Impact Of Steroids On Fertility

Steroids produce adverse impacts on the reproductive capability of both man and woman. The use of steroids would create decrease sperm count, decrease motility and abnormal shapes of sperms.
