What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation - - is the moment a mature egg is released from the ovary. Once released, the egg has a life span of about 24 hours. Conception is most likely to take place at this time.

The concept that ovulation occur at exact 14^th day or 12-14^th day of menstrual cycle is not trully correct as it although occurs mostly in a regular 28 days cycle that ovulation occurs at 12^th to 14^th day of cycle but actually medically the range of ovulation is 10th to 21^st day of menstrual cycle.(as it varies with length of cycle)

Difference between ovulation and fertile period:

The fertile period is the period of time when intercourse done will mostly highly result in conception. This period is around 6-7days. These days are 5days before ovulation and 2-3days after ovulation . 

The reason of fertile period extending before and after ovulation is that sperm survive in body for several days. 72 hours survival is medically shown.

while ovulation is just release of egg from ovary n that egg survive another 24hr and even sperm present of 2days earlier can fertilize it... but its v.difficult to calculate exact ovulation day so intercourse is recommended in fertile period.

The most common ways to predict ovulation :

BASAL BODY TEMPERATURE

Basal body temperature require u to monitor temperature every morning. With onset of ovulation temperature of body rise about 0.4F to 0.8F degree due to increase of progesterone in circulation.

THE CERVICAL MUCUS METHOD

Prior to ovulation cervical mucus increases in amount and becomes more slippery and thin.

Other signs that refer to ovulation are less well defined and not noticed by females

1. dull ache or pain on right or left side of lower abdomen. Some women have intense pain known as mid-cycle pain. Its less accurate as pain may start a day or two earlier and end after ovulation
2. breast tenderness
3. increased sex drive
4. increased sensitivity to smell.

Rough method to calculate fertile period and ovulation day using CALENDER METHOD

Females with average menstrual cycle

                   That is of 28days are expected to ovulate at 12^th to 14^th day of cycle therefore their fertility period is considered 10^th to 1bth day of cycle.

Females with irregular menstrual cycle

                   That is there cycle varies a lot between 21days to upto 38days . sometimes its 24day cycle some time its 34 day cycle are advised to calculate fertile period as follows:

Number1

   Note your menstrual cycle for 8-12months. Document first day and last day .

Number 2

      calculate the length of each cycle from first day of one cycle till the start of next cycle,this is 1 cycle.

Number 3

        Calculaculate the days of shortest cycle u experienced and the longest cycle u had in these 8-12 months.

Number4

          To know when ur most probable fertile period starts subtract 18 days from ur shortest cycle .  to know when ur most probable fertile period ends subtract 11days from longest cycle.

For example:

         Shortest cycle was 24days Minus 18 cumz 6.    and the longest cycle was 31 days minus 11 cumz 20 . this means the fertility duration last upto 20^th day of cycle.

Females who have a constant prolonged cycle

          that is the cycle is of not average days but prolonged for example 36days and remain 36days always are advised

           to take half of their cycle like 18th day if its 36day cycle constantly and consider fertile period 4days before this day and 4days after this day.

Western people also use ovulation kits which are strips that detect LH hormone surge or rise in secretion of a female is used to detect  ovulation.
