yes, its mandatory. Hernia were,are and probably never will be treated with medicines.Previously Truss(a sort of band) was used to reduce small size hernias but due to their dire consequences this practice is abolished.
plus hernia occurs when there is defect,weakness or abnormality of muscles or the supporting tissues and ur body organs come out of that weakness so that has to be treated and defect in mucles/wall be repaired.
not treating hernia may have awful results in future like obstruction or adhesions(matting together/stick together) or even blockage of blood supply to hernia contents....and gangrene/death of tissue with threat to persons life
