main purpose of self examination is to familiarize the normal feel and look and
detect any possible unusual changes. Since breasts go through numerous changes
overtime, it becomes essential to know what changes to look for while carrying
out a self examination.
These changes are:
·
Change
in normal appearance of breasts i.e. change in shape or size.
·
Change
in appearance of nipples such as inverted nipples.
·
Nipple
discharge
·
Rash
on or around nipple
·
Swelling
under armpit or around collarbone
·
Dimpling
or puckering of breast
·
Persistent
pain in any area of breast
·
Lumpiness
or thickening in any area of breast
These changes can be normal for you, but once
you detect them you need to consult your GP immediately. Remember that breast
cancer is mostly detected by women themselves so make sure you regularly check
your breasts with help of self examination. You can carry out self examination
in front of a mirror or lying on a bed. You only need to undress your body from
the waist up and use your hands to feel the normal appearance of breasts.
