RE:Phlegm (Sputum) Production - Phlegm Producing Foods Sputum Production:
Our Respiratory system starts from nose till the very finer and small cells or spaces of lungs.Production of respiratory secretions is a normal and protective mechanism to ward off any offending agent in respiratory tract.
However excess production of secretions(sputum) may be an indication of something as trivial as air pollution or allergy to particular material(pollen, fabric(wool) or simple acid reflux from GIT or can be a symptom of severe lung /respiratory tract diseases.
None of the Food cause sputum production(except the food to which one is allergic) some may cause temporary excess secretions due to allery. No food itself cause sputum production though fatty foods are considered to make sputum thick
Reasons Of Excessive Sputum:
Mostly allery or irritation to air passages via dust, pollen, wool, carpet material or spicy food and sometimes the food to which a person is allergic specifically(peanuts, fish or egg). Even excess cold air exposure may irritate passages and also excess clearing of throat repeatedly.Plus chronic exposure to certain occupational substances(cotton, coal, asbestos, silicon etc)
Secondaly infection... infection mostly of lower airways (lungs ) mostly produce more sputum like pneumonia... Or tuberculosis
other Lung Conditions: some of genetic(by birth) conditions like cystic fibrosis or other conditions like chronic bronchitis or bronchiectasis may cause excess sputum
some times chronic Flu and associated post-nasal drip(Secretions dropping from nose into throat) is the cause of sputum production as it may happen in people with deviated nasal septum(tilted nose bone) and nasal polyp or sinuses problem(allergic, infectious, non-allergic non-infectious or chronic sinusitis)
Sputum or Excess sputum Production for a very long time necessiates investigation like chest X-ray and sputum microscopy(&culture) plus a detailed history .
